This small oak tree grows in the middle of a meadow out the bike path from our house, about a half kilometer heading to the next small village. Its bulk against the denser woodland above it intrigues me, as the colors are very close, but the small shifts in tone and light areas define the relative forms. And the shadow on the sun dried grasses makes a counterpoint to the light on the trunk. I have drawn this oak many times on my daily morning walks, in all times of year and weather. This sketch took moments in August 2007, and was done on mounted Wallis Museum paper, using my limited palette-in-a-pocket kit. It is the basis of my painting Favorite Friend. |
